Rumor is there used to be only one kind of human- that is, if you consider them human at all.

Welcome to Eagle’s Nest, Colorado, home of the University of Colorado Eagles. A sprawling, idyllic town populated by mostly college aged adults with new and bright ideas- ideas that may make some of the locals a little uncomfortable.

Steeped in tradition, the founding families of Eagle’s Nest still live in the olden days, days in which the winged creatures were traded, sold, and used as slaves. Many of the families are reluctant to change this mindset, although the Angel Laws are becoming harder to ignore- especially with the onslaught of young, fresh minds pouring into the area as the University of Colorado becomes the first state school to integrate. It’s become a riskier deal to keep angels as pets, even with the new names these old families gave them- hired help, entertainers, all thin veils for their true roles as pets- slaves.

With so many different walks of life in one area, it seems that change is inevitable. But with all of the anti-angel movements in private, well.

It’ll be impossible not to ruffle a few feathers.

Alexandra “Lexi” Montgomery | 18 | Freshman | Human | Open

Easy-going is something that everyone would describe Lexi. She was always the girl who had a smile on her face and kind words for everyone. A high school cheerleader, Lexi never thought she would be smart enough to get into the University of Colorado, but when she did she was extremely happy. But then things changed and the Angel Laws took effect, something that for so long she had simply ignored: what had been going on behind closed doors. She had angels as servants- everyone did- but she never realized just how wrong it could be before the bills were passed.

Lexi took it upon herself to figure out more about what was going on in her own family and with her friends, but being nosy can certainly get many people in trouble, even easy going girls like her.

Tyler Williams | 19 | Human | Open

The Williams family is one of the founding families of Eagle’s Nest. Being the original owners of the Angel Trade Company, and the current owners of the Eagle’s Nest Country Club, a human’s only club complete with tennis courts and wet bar, it is painfully obvious where Tyler and his family’s opinions lie about the status of angels.

All of Tyler’s family had gone to the University of Colorado, attending classes, joining fraternities and sororities and being all around picturesque members of society. That is, until the Angel Laws were instated and the university became desegregated. Unfortunately for Tyler that meant no college, because he hadn’t applied anywhere else, and his family would not allow him to attend a place that allowed angels.

Tyler felt that the angels were the ones responsible for this, the ones that made his life miserable, and he wasn’t the only one who felt that way. He has been drawing up ideas for an anti-angel movement in the time out of school. Tyler can usually be found around the places that still don’t allow angels access, but it’s becoming harder to continue with that lifestyle as more and more of them pour in to the town to go to college.

Stephanie Wright | 18 | Freshman | Human

The Wright family lived in Hollywood from the time Stephanie was a little girl. She grew up around the stage and the silver screen, and learned to dance from the most talented choreographers. When her mother took in a young girl to work for her they never expected her to be “spectacular”. But when Christina’s wings grew in that glittering gold, Stephanie couldn’t help but be green with envy.

Her parents never outright compared their daughter to Christina- no one would embarrass their child so much as to be compared to an angel- but the sentiment was there. Stephanie could never be as genial, or as beautiful, or as talented as Christina. She could never be as perfect as her, she could never have what she had. She was just a dancer, not a skill she could use.

Stephanie always felt inferior around Christina, the angel of the silver screen, so when she got accepted to the University of Colorado she saw it as a way out. But then it was integrated, and Christina got accepted too. She wants nothing more than to be out of the shadow of her mother’s little pet, but how can she when they follow each other everywhere?

Jane Zimmerman | 21 | Junior | Human | Open

Jane has been dating Michael Morgan since the summer after their senior year. They fell fast for each other and easily became the couple everyone envied. He had those dashing good looks and she had the sparkling personality. They went everywhere together, did everything together, and generally had a good time together. But since the Angel Laws took effect, Jane saw a change in him; his smile never really seemed to reach his eyes anymore.

She of course blamed Lilly, even going so far as to threaten the poor angel, making sure she knew she would ruin her life if she ever stepped foot near her boyfriend again. She couldn’t stand the thought of losing her boyfriend to something so low and pitiful as an angel.

On the outside Jane and Michael’s relationship seems as normal as ever, perfect even. But she can see the cracks, and no matter how hard she works to ensure they are fixed she fears that the strain might actually break them.

Christopher “Chris” Barnes | 20 | Junior | Angel | Open

A transfer student from one of the private angel colleges, Chris was looking forward to living in a place where angels were considered equals. Boy, was he wrong.

When he first arrived in Eagle’s Nest the summer before his sophomore year, he realized just how wrong he was. There were still so many places he couldn’t go- the movie theater was still segregated, the churches, the park, even, had Humans Only painted on signs and windows. He never thought a town that had a desegregated college could still be so far behind.

Chris wanted to change all of that, so he joined the HAA and became fast friends with Ryan Gallagher. But it was still so hard when half of the humans looked down on the organization and many of the angels were afraid to be associated with it. Sometimes he himself wondered if this was the right choice for him.
